Fire risks are increased by the flammable and potentially explosive nature of some waste materials, such as lithium batteries, aerosols or electrical materials. To alert on potential fire outbreaks, thermal imaging associated with advanced analysis has proven its worth, following the example of Hikvision technologies.

Challenge – reducing fire risk

Controlling the frequency and severity of fire risks is a major challenge for the recycling industry.

Whether they are triggered by chemical waste, electrical components, or by malicious acts or human negligence, fires in the recycling industry have serious consequences that can even call into question the continuation of the activity.

Fires are often extremely difficult to contain, and the nature of the materials burned is sometimes unknown... This has serious consequences for the health of the population, and major risks for the environment (air, soil, rivers, water tables...)

Solution – bringing in thermal technology

To control these new risks and issues, Derichebourg Technologies has relied on Hikvision thermal detection technology to deploy innovative solutions on high-risk sites that detect temperature rises and therefore a potential fire outbreak. These alerts are processed in the same way as fire alarms by the operators of the APSAD P5 approved remote monitoring station.

To ensure that temperature increases can be detected on its customers' sites before they translate into uncontrollable fire outbreaks, the company decided to deploy an innovative thermal imaging solution from the leader in intelligent video and AI, Hikvision. The solution, which was installed by security specialist Visio Control, includes Hikvision's dual-spectrum PTZ dome camera (DS-2TD4137T-9/W). This one is mounted on a high mast, allowing a 360° visibility and a detection of temperature rise in real time on the whole site.

Thermal cameras are a major asset wherever there is a risk of fire starting outside. Indeed, they have a very large field of view and are able to detect temperature rises on entire sites.

If the surface temperature of an object increases in the thermal spectrum (i.e. becomes hotter), the camera triggers an alert to the security operator and the site manager in real time. The alarm can then be confirmed immediately based on high quality video footage transmitted from the camera to the alarm receiving center, showing the security operator the exact nature, location and size of the fire.

In tests conducted at the site, the camera was able to immediately detect a person setting a fire. In this case, the system triggered an alert to the security operator, as well as a video verification of the fire incident, allowing him to react in real-time.

With the Hikvision thermal imaging solution in place, Derichebourg Technologies minimizes the risk of fire outbreaks.

In addition, the company increases its operational efficiency, with a reduced need for human patrols on site.

Based on Deep Learning technology, the Hikvision solution adapts to specific conditions on site. This further reduces false alarms and contributes to a detection accuracy of up to 98%, thereby increasing the efficiency of operators handling alarms.
