Multi-Factor Authentication Boosts Online Safety: Hikvision Presents Insights for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is in full swing! We hope you are learning how to stay safe online and boosting your cybersecurity. Hikvision will continue to write cybersecurity blogs this month for dealers, distributors, end users and the community to expand their ability to boost cybersecurity.

Today we want to provide the tip to turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever is it available. MFA requires a user to provide additional authentication methods or verification, in addition to entering the correct username and password, to successfully log into an account. This action greatly reduces security concerns and lowers the risk of your password being hacked.

There are commonly four factors of authentication used today:

1.     Something you have (i.e. a number generator like Google Authenticator)

2.     Something you know (i.e. a password or passphrase)

3.     Something you are (i.e. biometrics like fingerprint)

4.     Where you are (i.e. GPS location tracked by your phone or IP address location)

A subset of multi-factor authentication, two-factor authentication (2FA), is a means of authenticating with just two pieces of verifiable evidence or factors. This is also a good way to prevent being hacked if MFA is not available. However, Hikvision recommends enabling MFA on all accounts that have it available.

As always, visit our online Cybersecurity Center for more information about staying safe online. And stay tuned for more Hikvision cybersecurity blogs during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month!
