Don’t Fret this Halloween! Use Our 5 Tips to Tackle Malware, Phishing and Security Concerns

Hikvision is glad to be a resource to help you address security concerns, like email threats in the form of phishing and malware. Security Magazine released an article about a recent VIPRE Security Group Report where email security and threats were analyzed. It discovered that over 200 million malicious emails were detected in Q3 of 2023. 100 million emails were attributed to malicious content while 118 million were attributed to malicious attachments. We understand that these numbers may sound scary, but Hikvision has information to help you stay safe.

Phishing is the malicious use of social engineering to obtain sensitive information or access from an unsuspecting victim. These attacks can come in the form of email, social media links, or other digital means that an attacker can use to trick a victim.

One of Hikvision’s main cybersecurity goals is to keep your organization safe from phishing and malware attacks. Chuck Davis, Hikvision’s Vice President of Global Information Security, has provided 5 tips for preventing these kinds of attacks:

1.      Use firewalls and firebreaks (network segmentation): Place devices behind firewalls to protect them from untrusted networks, such as the Internet. And use network segmentation.

2.      Protect your computer from vulnerabilities: Clean up your computer by removing old software programs no longer in use, and make sure to install patches regularly. Updating firmware safeguards equipment by patching known vulnerabilities. Hikvision provides firmware update information on its website.

3.      Reset default passwords and make them complex: Users should be required to change any default password to one with at least eight characters, and at least one of each of the following: numbers, special characters, and uppercase and lowercase letters. Ideally, a password should be at least 12 characters and not be used anywhere else. To manage all your complex, unique passwords, use a password manager.

4.      Manage your router: It’s recommended that everyone reboot all home routers and small office routers.

5.      Run active scans and updates: When a computer notifies you of an available update, run it immediately. In addition, you can actively run malware and vulnerability scans for network devices. Backup your data so that if you get infected with malware, you can re-install your data and the operating system.
