SDM Cybersecurity Article Features Insights from Hikvision VP of Global Information Security, Chuck Davis

SDM magazine recently published an article on video security and cybersecurity risk, where Hikvision’s VP of Global Information Security, Chuck Davis, is quoted alongside other security industry leaders about reducing risk with IoT devices and more.

“In today’s interconnected security industry, there are more cameras, IoT, and edge devices ‘talking’ to each other than ever before. Modern IP cameras have powerful processing, networking, and storage capabilities that make them incredibly versatile, while cloud technology enables more data storage, and the internet connects them all. … But there’s a downside to all this progress: more devices, cloud usage, open source software components, and internet connection also means more exposure to cyber risk,” stated the article.

Ransomware, a form of malware which hackers install on a computer or device after gaining access through a successful phishing attack, is still the No. 1 threat according to Davis, and referenced in the article. “Ransomware quietly encrypts all of the files and folders on your computer, and any data on connected USB or mounted shared drives, and then uploads the decryption key to the threat actor who tricked you into installing the ransomware,” he said. “You’ll only receive the decryption key from the ransomware threat actor after paying the ransom fee.”

IoT devices are prone to vulnerabilities, which Hikvision’s Davis has been covering for many years. In another industry publication, he covered how integrators can use network segmentation as a first line of defense to reduce attacks.
