Hacker Interest in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Servers Grew in March

Hikvision on Network Segmentation to Boost Cybersecurity, Reduce Hacks

The Security magazine article, “30% Increase in Attacker Interest in Remote Desktop Protocol in March 2020,” covers research by cybersecurity provider SANS Institute, which found hacker interest in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) servers grew by 30 percent in March 2020.

RDP is a method for companies to enable employees to work remotely.

From the article: “The findings for March are concerning, as they also coincide with the massive surge in companies worldwide that needed to close offices and quickly stand up remote workforces to comply with social distancing restrictions due to the rapid spread of COVID-19. The concern is that, in order to quickly and inexpensively enable employees to work from home, some organizations have implemented RDP, which can expose confidential systems to the public Internet.”

SANS Institute suggestions to improve cybersecurity include use of a long and unique password to secure RDP servers, and use of a cloud server using secure protocols such as cryptographic SSH (secure shell) to connect to the cloud.
