Study Highlights Security Breach Predictions Driven by Pandemic-Related Fears, Threat Actors Exploiting Concerns About Coronavirus

Hikvision on Pandemic-Driven Security Concerns

A new Experian study highlights security breach predictions driven by pandemic-related fears, and unscrupulous threat actors who will take advantage of people’s concerns about the coronavirus. The research is covered in the SecurityInfoWatch.com story, “Spread of Covid-19 gives rise to the 'cyber-demic.'”

The Experian Data Breach Industry Forecast provided several predictions including cybercriminals targeting the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

“I think we’ve really entered the cyber-demic era right now because … these (attacks) are going to have a long-term impact on privacy and security considerations for everybody. Hackers are going to have new targets and they’re definitely using some new means. Why I use the term ‘cyber-demic’ is because it is pandemic-influenced, and it also focuses on many unsecure apps and devices and the new technology and threat vectors,” said Michael Bruemmer, Experian Data Breach Resolution VP, in the article.

The study also predicted that:

  • Ransomware will continue to grow and may begin to impact smart home devices.
  • The healthcare industry will face new threats, especially with breaches that threaten digital or telehealth data.
  • Human behavior will remain a factor as many employees continue with remote work and learn to identify and avoid clicking malicious links.

Early in 2020, Hikvision blogged about growing concerns with security driven by pandemic-related cyber threats. Click to read the article: “Hikvision Blog Series: Senior Cybersecurity Director on COVID-19 Hacks, Phishing & Cyberattacks.”
