Security Magazine on Physical Intrusion Hacks and Data Breach

Hikvision on Cyber Threats Such as Vulnerabilities, Password Hacks, Backdoor Exploits

Data security breaches can be caused by physical hacker intrusions in addition to cyberattacks such as malware, says the article in Security magazine, “When Physical Intrusions Lead to Digital Breaches.”

From the article: “Workers in industries like the healthcare sector might picture cybercrime as something that happens from afar—breaches due to hackers from across town, or around the world. But enterprise security leaders know otherwise: would-be hackers also break into facilities and steal a laptop or other equipment that holds sensitive company information, or plug into a network on an Internet-enabled phone or other port. For that reason, healthcare institutions are pairing increased cybersecurity with tightened physical access through proper identification solutions, other equipment like cameras, and training to prevent social engineering techniques like “tailgating,” where an unauthorized person slips in behind someone who presents a proper ID.”

The article cites a joint report by Michigan State University and John Hopkins, which reviewed more than 1,100 electronic medical record cases that were found to affect more than 164 million patients, with security breach caused by issues such as unauthorized access, not a cyber-hack.

An attitude of hospitality can also create problems, as employees don’t always want to confront someone that walked through a door without checking in with security. Organizations are finding that training employees to ask simple questions such as, “May I help you with something?” can deter intruders and improve security.
