Security Magazine Covers New COVID-19 Related Phishing Scams, Rising Concerns

Coronavirus Hacks and Scams Outlined by Hikvision

COVID-19 related phishing scams and rising concerns are covered in the Security magazine article, “Two New COVID-19 Related Phishing Scams.” The new scams were found by mobile phishing solutions provider, Lookout.

From the article: “On Twitter, Lookout's Phishing AI detailed its findings of live phishing sites targeting the website of the French General Directorate of Public Finance, the branch of the French government responsible for handing out support to micro-businesses and independent workers in the COVID-19 crisis. The site asks potential victims to enter their address, name and credit card information.”

Not surprising, Lookout found many active sites are hosting the keyword “COVID-19” in their domain name, the article added.

Hikvision’s senior director of cybersecurity, Chuck Davis, outlined other examples of recent coronavirus phishing hacks in this blog. As the virus becomes a global concern, cybercriminals are leveraging the tragedy to spread their own kind of virus and digital attacks to prey on the fears of people around the world. In it, Davis stated that COVID-19 malware and phishing attacks are on the rise, and include “a cyberattack against the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, a new and growing botnet that recruits IoT devices, credit card skimming on websites, and a security firm re-breaches over 5 billion records.”

Lookout principal product manager, Alex Gladd, added in the Security magazine article: “During times like these, it's more important than ever for people to be hyper-vigilant about links they receive via email, messaging, and social media.”
