What Is an IP Camera?
An IP camera — also referred to as a network camera — is a digital imaging device that transmits video data over an IP network rather than through traditional analogue cabling. Unlike analogue CCTV cameras that require a direct connection to a DVR, IP cameras connect to a network switch or NVR via a standard Ethernet cable, enabling centralised management, remote access, and scalable system design.
IP cameras support Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing a single cable to carry both data and power — reducing installation complexity and cost. Modern IP cameras also support H.265+ compression, significantly reducing storage and bandwidth requirements without compromising image quality.
Hikvision's IP camera range extends well beyond basic image capture. Across series including AcuSense, ColorVu, DeepinView and Panoramic, cameras are purpose-engineered with AI analytics, advanced low-light imaging, and multi-sensor architectures — delivering actionable intelligence across residential, commercial, and critical infrastructure applications throughout Australia and New Zealand.
