What Are Turnstiles and Speed Gates?

Turnstiles and speed gates are automated pedestrian access control barriers that regulate the flow of authorised individuals through secured entry points. While both prevent unauthorised access and tailgating, they differ in application and security level.

Turnstiles — including tripod and full height models — provide robust physical barriers suited to high-security environments such as industrial sites, construction zones, stadiums, and transport hubs. Their rotating arm or floor-to-ceiling design makes them extremely difficult to bypass, making them the preferred choice where maximum entrance control is required.

Speed gates, also known as swing barriers, are designed for high-traffic commercial settings where throughput speed and aesthetics matter equally. Commonly deployed in corporate office foyers, universities, airports, and banks across Australia and New Zealand, speed gates use retractable panels that open rapidly upon credential validation.
