What Security Concerns Will Continue in 2021? Security Magazine Makes 7 Predictions

Hikvision Work From Home Tips To Reduce Security Concerns For Remote Workers

What security concerns will be most prominent in the year 2021? Security magazine covers its cybersecurity forecast in the story, “Seven cybersecurity predictions for 2021.”

From the article: “Cybercriminals will always follow users and launch attacks that exploit their behaviors and habits. We saw this very clearly in 2020 when employees suddenly became remote workers to comply with stay-at-home orders, and their use of technology and devices shifted. Cybercriminals took advantage of this disruption to launch phishing, vishing, ransomware, and a whole slew of other attacks that targeted gaps in companies’ security postures, as many were not prepared to support a remote workforce securely.”

Hikvision covered the rise in COVID-related cyberattacks in a blog series that can be viewed here.

The first prediction in the Security magazine article is that cybercriminals will continue to target remote workers in 2021 as organizations learn to adapt to a remote workforce and address related cyber threats. The story cites a Bitglass study where 82 percent of companies allowed BYOD (bring your own device) for employees and partners, while the same study confirmed that “72 percent lacked BYOD malware protection entirely.”

VPNs will continue to be the target of malicious threat actors. Using a virtual private network (VPN) ensures that work-related traffic goes through the company network before it gets to the Internet. While it offers added security, the article notes that unpatched VPNs can be exploited with ransomware.

The healthcare and financial industries face numerous challenges, according to the article. Read about the 2021 cybersecurity predictions in more detail here.
