Hikvision Cybersecurity Education Blogs: Learn About Security Concerns & Phishing Threats
Insider threats can heighten security concerns and financially impact organizations, and some employees may not realize they are compromising company data. Canadian Security magazine discusses ways to limit an organization’s exposure and cybersecurity risk in the article, “How to prevent insider risk within a company.”
Insider threats come about due to the actions of employees, contractors, as well as suppliers. While some insider incidents have been caused knowingly by disgruntled employees, insiders can also unknowingly become victims of cybercriminals. Threat actors can easily send an email or text to an employee that appears authentic, according to the article, making insiders susceptible to accidental disclosure of key financial or network information.
“The most common tactic used is phishing, which are cleverly disguised communications that appear to come from a trusted source asking victims to share information or download a malicious file. We even see adversaries creating fake social media profiles to befriend victims while posing as a current or former co- worker, job recruiter, or someone with a shared interest,” according to Derek Manky, chief of security insights at FortiGuard Labs, in the article.
The article’s author recommends that organizations expand responsibility for cybersecurity beyond the IT professional’s purview and educate employees on how to protect company systems and information. Creating a “culture of prevention” helps everyone take responsibility for the role they play in preventing hacks.
