Security Magazine: Ways for SMBs to Reduce Concerns, Boost Security

Hikvision on Fundamentals to Address Cybersecurity Concerns

Understanding cybersecurity concerns and how to protect against them is important as hackers shift their attention to SMBs. The Security magazine article, “Tips small businesses can use to strengthen their cyber health,” offers several ways small businesses can reduce vulnerabilities and risk of breach.

Twenty-eight percent of security breaches involved small businesses, according to the ,">Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, making it critical that these organizations learn how to protect their networks and data.

From the article: “While cyberattacks targeting large corporations or government agencies tend to make splashy headlines, the truth is that many attackers are shifting their priorities to focus on small businesses. Unfortunately, these smaller businesses generally lack the resources and security capabilities of larger organizations. In fact, 83 percent of small business owners report handling cybersecurity matters themselves.”

Many breaches involve attacks using stolen credentials that were acquired through phishing or other cyberattack methods. Granting access to users only based on their role and daily responsibilities can reduce this risk. The article added: “Finding and remediating these exposed credentials before attackers identify and exploit them is essential. Businesses can turn the situation to their advantage by seeding their networks with deceptive credentials that trick intruders into exposing themselves.”

Ransomware threats are also growing. Ransomware quietly encrypts all the files and folders on your computer, and any data on connected USB or mounted shared drives, and then uploads the decryption key to the threat actor who tricked you into installing the ransomware. You will then see a screen show up on your computer that informs you that your data is encrypted. To get the key to decrypt your files, you must pay a ransom to the threat actor. Boosting in-network protections can boost security in the face of ransomware threats.
