Ecuador’s leading retailer enhances operational efficiency with Hikvision’s advanced PDAs

In the fast-paced retail world, efficiency is everything. For MegaKywi, one of Ecuador's leading retailers, managing inventory and daily tasks across 34 stores is a massive undertaking, with staff performing hundreds of thousands of scans every day. By deploying a fleet of over 1,100 Hikvision Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), the company has transformed its in-store operations, achieving new levels of speed, accuracy, and centralized control that ripple through every part of the business.

 

MegaKywi, a leading home and personal care retailer in Ecuador, operates 34 stores across the country, managing a demanding, high-volume environment where efficiency is paramount. With staff performing an average of 1,500 scans per day in standard Kywi stores and up to 2,200 in larger Megakywi locations, quick access to product information and seamless device performance are business-critical.

 

"We had a functional inventory system, but we wanted to take it to the next level," explains Santiago Ávila, Head of the Technical Department at MegaKywi. “We were looking to enhance it with robust equipment that would allow us to improve traceability and real-time control, as well as user-friendly and fast administration."

Advanced scanning, rugged design, centralized control and support

 

To support its growth and maintain strong customer service reputation, MegaKywi required a modern, scalable, and fully manageable solution. Working with system integrator Trust-Tech Solutions, MegaKywi deployed over 1,100 Hikvision Handheld Scanners (DS-MDT201) and Handheld Terminals (DS-MDT202) across all 34 locations. This comprehensive fleet became the foundation of MegaKywi's modernized operations, supporting everything from inventory management to customer service.

Designed for the rigors of daily retail operations, the Hikvision PDAs feature enterprise-grade durability with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. They can withstand the inevitable drops and bumps of busy store environments. Long-lasting, replaceable batteries ensure devices remain operational throughout entire shifts, preventing productivity-killing downtime.

 

For daily in-store tasks, the PDAs deliver powerful scanning capabilities that keep operations moving smoothly. Featuring high-performance barcode recognition with laser aiming, the devices can capture data even from blurry or damaged barcodes. Staff rely on them for multiple tasks: checking prices, verifying stock levels, and capturing images of defective products.

 

Crucially, Hikvision’s PDAs offer an open architecture that seamlessly integrates with MegaKywi’s proprietary Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform. This compatibility provides MegaKywi's IT department with complete, centralized control over the entire fleet. From a single interface, administrators can now perform batch firmware upgrades, remotely deploy proprietary applications, and replicate configurations across all devices simultaneously. These capabilities eliminate countless hours of manual work, ensuring consistency across the network while significantly reducing support response times.

To further elevate both ambiance and communication, MegaKywi also deployed 3 units of Hikvision’s Network Column Speaker (DS-QAZ14A2G1) and 4 units of Hikvision’s Network Cabinet Speaker (DS-QAZ1120G1R-B), across high-traffic areas, aisles, checkout zones, and customer service points. These networked speakers deliver high-quality background music and crystal-clear announcements, creating a more welcoming shopping atmosphere while supporting store-wide communications.
