The University of Bradford, which is known for its dedication to innovation, social mobility, and sustainability, has recently taken a major step towards modernizing its campus. The aim was to improve the learning environments and create standout spaces that would leave a lasting impression on students, staff, and visitors. To achieve this, the university partnered with Roche AV Pro, a leading audiovisual solution provider, who used Hikvision’s advanced LED display technology to transform key parts of the campus.
One of the most impressive examples of the transformation is Horton Barn, the university’s largest lecture theater. Before the update, three projectors had been fixed on a steel beam which, unfortunately shook when doors were opened or shut. Somebody entering room could disrupt the lecture. To solve this, the university replaced the projects with a LED wall. Two Hikvision 5th generation 4K resolution P1.2 COB LED displays (DS-D4012BW-2FC) were placed side-by-side, to create an enormous video wall 9.6 meters wide and 2.7 meters high. Excellent brightness and resolution are guaranteed by the screen’s Flip-Chip COB technology, making the video wall ideal for interactive teaching sessions. Russ Hind, who is Head of IT Service Delivery at Bradford, said: “The Barn now boasts a massive display that delivers a real ‘wow’ factor. Students are captivated, and it’s clear how this will elevate their learning. This is a flagship space we aim to replicate elsewhere.”
Student Central—a hub for socializing, studying, and entertainment—also underwent a transformation. Previously, the area only had small TVs that failed to engage students effectively. Roche AV Pro installed a 3 m by 1.75 m Hikvision P1.5 Flex series LED display (DS-D4215FI-CGFB), to create a centerpiece for the revamped space. Its sleek, ultra-thin design complements the vibrant atmosphere, while its versatility allows it to showcase sports events, host karaoke nights, and display announcements. Nick Cragg, an architect at the university, remarked: “The area is now cleaner, brighter, and more inviting. The LED display serves as a fantastic focal point for events, significantly enhancing the student experience.”
In the university’s Midwifery teaching facility, meanwhile, Hikvision P1.2 COB LED displays (DS-D4012BW-2FC) have again been used to create a video wall, this time 4.8 m by 2.7 m. It has also benefited from the installation of some projectors and smaller screens. These new additions improve midwifery education by sharing content across multiple teaching spaces. Students can now view instructional materials while practicing in simulation scenarios, creating a more interactive and accessible learning environment. Emily Bee, Assistant Professor at the university, said: “The installation has revolutionized our teaching methods, making content more accessible and supporting our vision for modern midwifery education.”
The University of Bradford is committed to ensuring the campus is as sustainable as possible which is why the energy efficiency of the Hikvision products is so important. The Flip-Chip COB technology used in the LED displays, for example, reduces device temperature by 5-10°C and cuts power consumption by around 45%. Durable aluminum shells, meanwhile, ensure long-term use with minimal maintenance. Stafford Lund, Roche’s Sales Manager, commented: “Working with Hikvision has allowed us to deliver impressive LED displays in key spaces. This sustainability-focused project aligns perfectly with both our goals and that of the university.”
With the implementation of this project, the university is also fulfilling its vision of a more inclusive campus by focusing on enhancing accessibility. The clear, bright visuals make information visible from various angles and distances, benefiting people of all physical abilities. This not only eases information access for students, staff, and visitors, but also enhances hybrid learning capabilities, strengthening the diversity of learning experiences.
The University of Bradford’s adoption of Hikvision’s LED displays sets a great example of what a modern campus can look like. By integrating LED displays into key spaces, the university has not only enhanced learning and social environments but also reinforced its commitment to sustainability and accessibility. As Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Congdon noted, “Bradford students expect access to the latest technology. This investment is part of our ongoing effort to elevate their experience—ensuring they’re equipped with the resources they need to succeed.”
