Availability, allocation, and identification: Solving the parking puzzle at Emirates NBD Meydan buildings
The Emirates NBD Meydan buildings is the newest, and largest, branch of the UAE’s leading financial institution. Despite this, it wanted to elevate the parking experience for staff and visitors to improve efficiency, security, and convenience. By deploying Hikvision’s smart parking solution, the branch has successfully transformed its parking operations, setting a new standard for customer and employee satisfaction.
The Meydan Branch’s parking facility is large: it can hold 583 vehicles belonging to employees and visitors and includes designated areas for VIPs, staff with special needs, and accessible parking. Originally, all of this was managed manually leading, too often, to confusion and the misallocation of spaces. The difficulties of ensuring only authorized vehicles accessed reserved zones, for example, caused inefficiencies and occasional frustration.
Another challenge was a lack of information about real-time parking availability. Although the branch used ultrasonic sensors, this system only provided basic information—such as the number of free spaces—without linking license plates to specific slots. Because it was difficult to associate individual vehicles with designated spaces, it was hard for security teams to determine whether a parked car was authorized to occupy a particular spot, or not. This meant that unauthorized parking could go unnoticed, leading to inefficiencies and disputes.
What’s more, the branch used a third-party platform that did not support unified device management or intelligent access authorization list management. This led to further difficulties managing all the devices in the parking lot and made it hard to differentiate between employees' and visitors' vehicles. It was clear that there was a need for a parking management platform that was more comprehensive and intelligent.
To address these challenges, Emirates NBD partnered with Hikvision to deploy a comprehensive smart parking solution. The Physical Security Department at Emirates NBD Group played a crucial role in this collaboration, working closely with Hikvision to ensure the system met the bank's specific security and operational requirements. The new system includes 139 Dual-Sensor iBeacon Guidance Cameras (DS-TCP440), equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and real-time parking space detection. These high-definition cameras ensure accurate monitoring, even in low-light conditions such as an underground garage. The cameras feature integrated indicators which enable them to visually guide drivers to available spots. Configurable in different colors, they help drivers quickly recognize parking space status, including availability, reservations, and special designations.
The solution also features 16 Video Guidance Terminals (DS-TPM400) and 11 LED Screens (DS-TVL121). These are strategically placed to display real-time parking availability and guide drivers to open spaces. Two Barrier Gates (DS-TMG520) with adjustable speeds and multiple control modes streamline vehicle entry and exit, while a Parking Entrance Guidance Screen (DS-TVB200) welcomes drivers with messages and parking information.
At the heart of the system, the HikCentral platform provides centralized management of vehicle access control, parking space monitoring, and automated reporting. This unified platform enables Emirates NBD’s IT and security teams to oversee the entire parking system efficiently, ensuring seamless operations and enhanced security.
The implementation of Hikvision’s smart parking solution has delivered significant benefits for both the management team and the branch’s staff and visitors. For the management team, it has improved operational efficiency by providing real-time visibility, centralized control, and detailed reporting. Security personnel can now track vehicles quickly, monitor parking spaces in real time, and receive alerts for unauthorized use of reserved zones. These features reduce manual labor and improved decision-making through data-driven insights.
For staff and visitors, the new system delivers a smoother and more satisfying parking experience. Faster vehicle entry and exit, combined with smart navigation via LED screens, minimizes congestion and reduces the time spent searching for parking. Guidance cameras help drivers locate vacant spots quickly, optimizing space utilization and enhancing overall convenience.
The success of the system at the Meydan Branch has prompted Emirates NBD to consider expanding the solution to other branches. “It's so much easier for our security team, and more convenient for every staff and visitor,” said Mr. Mahmoud Hawawreh, the Security System Manager at Emirates NBD Group’s Physical Security Department. “Our plans include integrating smart parking and further unifying platform management to ensure consistent and efficient parking operations across all branches.”
By using Hikvision’s smart parking technology, Emirates NBD has not only addressed its parking management challenges but also set a benchmark for innovation and customer-centric solutions in the banking sector.
