Greater than the sum of the parts: The SS Seguranca Eletronica partnership with Hikvision is transforming the operations of remote monitoring service companies

Companies that provide remote monitoring services are in a constant struggle with complexity. Intruder alarm systems are often augmented with fire detection, video monitoring, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems, and more. To prevent this getting out of control, a Brazilian software company has developed a platform called SYSMON which converges all monitoring feeds into a single, unified system. We spoke to Ricardo Rodrigues, one of the co-founders and Chief Technical Officer, to find out more.

Ricardo Rodrigues, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder, SS Seguranca Eletronica LTDA.

Q: Can you please tell us a bit about yourself and your company?

A: I think the key thing to understand is that our company’s original role and expertise was, and still is, to provide multiple remote monitoring services to customers. The sheer number of things that companies like us need to monitor is huge. They include alarms, still and video images, vehicle tracking telemetries, analytics events, and data generated by security devices such as facial recognition, license plate numbers, and so on. My role has been to create a software platform which enables us to monitor and control multiple data feeds at the same time. Our platform, SYSMON, works so well that we decided to create a spin-off company—SS Seguranca Eletronica LTDA—to sell it to other alarm receiving centers.

Q: Can you tell us more about the challenges that alarm receiving centers and remote monitoring service companies face?

A: Without SYSMON, every data feed needs to be monitored using the native software that comes with it. Even people who are naturally good at multi-tasking struggle with that. Customer reporting is another huge challenge as data needs to be pulled from multiple different systems and manually combined. Also, without a unified monitoring feed, issues such as battery failures, sensor faults, and false alarms are often missed. This can sometimes cause extremely high operational costs, especially when an engineer must be sent to the premises to solve the problem.

Q: How does SYSMON solve these problems?

A: SYSMON is all about convergence. It converges computing resources, networks, storage systems, system administration, software administration—as well as a lot of advanced functionality such as predictive analysis—into a single, unified, platform. We sell this to companies who provide remote monitoring services. It enables them to significantly speed up their response times for identifying issues, making decisions, detecting failures, and initiating procedures to address problems. In other words, it enables them to deliver much faster, more streamlined services at a significantly lower cost.

Over time we have continued to develop and enhance the system. For example, the cloud system has been joined by two separate apps—one for the remote monitoring companies themselves and another one designed specifically for use by their clients. These apps enable operators and/or customers to order different services, manage their vehicle fleets, or schedule tasks such as patrols, watering plants and collecting mail. It also enables client security systems to be activated or deactivated at particular times on different days of the week.

Q: How did you incorporate Hikvision technologies into your solution?

A: We began working with Hikvision in 2016, following the Exposec exhibition in São Paulo. What initially struck me was how Hik-Connect was able to greatly simplify the process of providing remote, yet secure, access to Hikvision cameras via a simple cloud-based account. Since then, whilst Hikvision has continued to evolve its platforms and devices, SYSMON has always kept pace. Today, in addition to Hik-Connect, we integrate with Hik-Partner Pro, Hik IP Receiver Pro, Device Gateway and—via OpenAPI—HikCentral. With these integrations users get access to all devices that are linked to their Hikvision account directly within SYSMON. It means that operators can view live video feeds, recordings, snapshots, and event details from Hikvision devices without switching programs.

Q: How important has the Hikvision team in Brazil been to your integration?

A: That’s a really interesting question. In my experience, a major obstacle every developer faces when integrating their new product with any brand is getting in touch with the right person who is knowledgeable enough to help. This hasn’t been a problem with Hikvision at all. My main Hikvision contacts here in Brazil are always willing and, crucially, able to play a fundamental role whenever we need to integrate new Hikvision equipment or functionality. Recently, when we wanted to create a more sophisticated integration with Hikvision’s facial recognition technology, for example, they were invaluable in helping us with everything from API creation to the configurations of firmware.

Q: How do you see your partnership with Hikvision evolving and growing in the future?

A: It’s a competitive world, and our SYSMON team is constantly fighting to retain our position in the market. That means we must be continually focused on finding new, more efficient solutions to the problems and challenges facing remote monitoring companies and thinking of new ways to help them exploit new innovative opportunities.

This is why our close partnership with Hikvision is so important. Hikvision, after all, is one of the most innovative companies in the world and especially so with security systems and technologies. That’s why our relationship with Hikvision is not only essential for SYSMON today, but I am sure it will continue to be critical for our commercial success long into the future.
