To mark this year’s Earth Day, we are proud to share our latest social good project: a collaboration with Projecte 4 Estacions to support meteorological observation in the Pyrenees.

The Pyrenees stand as a breathtaking testament to the natural grandeur in southwestern Europe, a majestic range where sweeping valleys, pristine lakes, and an ever-shifting climate command both awe and respect. For those who seek to understand the moods of these peaks, observing the weather is not just a science — it is a true calling.

Projecte 4 Estacions, answering this call, is a non-profit driven by a dedicated group of "weather geeks." Serving communities across Catalonia, Spain, and the neighboring Andorra, their mission is simple yet profound: to bridge the gap between complex meteorological data and the public. By deepening the understanding of alpine weather and climate, they strive to connect people with the high-mountain environment while protecting ecosystems.

Navigating the Blind Spots of Nature

Observing nature at high-mountain environments presents daunting challenges, particularly in the Aran Valley on the northern side of the Pyrenees. Here, the Refugi de Colomèrs sits at a staggering altitude of 2,135 meters. While every winter the freezing temperatures transform the valley into a breathtaking paradise for winter sports, this beautiful landscape can turn perilous in an instant.

Sudden blizzards and plummeting temperatures constantly threaten the safety of hikers, skiers, and local residents. Furthermore, in these remote and secluded areas, the absence of human presence creates critical visual blind spots. This lack of real-time information not only hinders long-term climate research but also leaves outdoor enthusiasts vulnerable, forcing rescuers to take critical actions during emergencies.

Tech as All-Weather Guardian

It was within this demanding environment that Hikvision and Projecte 4 Estacions found a shared vision. As Jan Ponsa, President of Projecte 4 Estacions, explained: "The main goal of this project, together with Hikvision and the STAR Program, is to monitor mountain weather a bit more closely." To turn this goal into reality, a suite of high-performance cameras was donated and deployed through the Hikvision STAR Program, serving as all-weather guardians on the mountain. To survive and function in such a harsh landscape, precision technology had to be adapted for the extremes.

The installed cameras are equipped with built-in heating systems, ensuring they remain operational even when the mountain freezes. Sleet and snowfall are seamlessly managed by intelligent wiper functionality, which continuously clears the lens to maintain a crystal-clear view. Furthermore, powered by Hikvision’s DarkFighter technology and panoramic PTZ capabilities, the cameras cut through the darkness and low-light conditions, capturing high-definition, 360-degree meteorological dynamics around the clock.

Safety, Science, and Connection

Today, these technological sentinels quietly stand above the clouds, delivering impactful values to the region. They act as a visual lifeline, providing instant weather updates for hikers and skiers, while crucially offering rescuers the real-time visibility needed.

Beyond immediate community safety, the project empowers long-term environmental stewardship by connecting people with nature. “What we aim to do with our cameras is to provide a service for everyone who loves the mountains, people who enjoy hiking, skiing… so they can connect to see weather conditions,” shared Joan Vendrell from Projecte 4 Estacions. This real-time broadcast not only brings the breathtaking beauty of the high mountains directly to the public but also fosters a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation. Furthermore, by continuously recording climatic shifts, the project is building an invaluable visual archive for ongoing meteorological research and climate observation.

The technological journey in the Pyrenees serves as a beautiful reminder of our relationship with the planet. Technology should not distance us from nature; rather, it should empower us to understand, appreciate, and protect it. Through the STAR Program, Hikvision remains committed to exploring how "Tech for Good" can safeguard our magnificent landscapes and build a safer, more sustainable future for all.
