Weak Passwords Found to be 2019’s Most Common Vulnerability

Hikvision on Preventing Password Hacks Using a Password Manager

Weak passwords were found to be the cause of 30 percent of ransomware infections during 2019, and were the year’s most common vulnerability, according to a Security magazine article that covered research by PreciseSecurity.com.

From the article: “The 2019 Statista survey reveals that 64 percent of U.S. respondents find stolen passwords as the most concerning issue about data privacy. However, such a high level of concern didn't affect their habits related to keeping track of login information. According to the findings, 43 percent of respondents reported that their primary method of keeping track of their most crucial login information was to write it down. Another 45 percent of respondents named memorizing the login data as their primary method of tracking. At the same time, only 12 percent of U.S. online users take advantage of password managers.”

The research also found that:

  • Password re-use and weak passwords pose a risk for companies and individuals.
  • 23.2 million victim accounts from all parts of the world used the password “123456.”

Read more about the research online at Security magazine.
