Ransomware Poses a Security Concern to Organizations, But Can Be Prevented with Tips to Boost Cybersecurity & Reduce Vulnerabilities

Prevent Malware with Hikvision Tips to Protect Against this Security Concern

Ransomware is a security concern that poses a threat to organizations, but it can be prevented by taking several measures to reduce vulnerabilities and boost cybersecurity. Recommendations to prevent ransomware are covered in the Cybersecurity Insiders article, “Ransomware Attacks Can Be Prevented, Really.”

A description of ransomware from the article: “Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts a victim’s files or blocks access to a system until a sum of money (ransom) demanded by the attacker is paid. Your systems and data can be infected by ransomware in a variety of ways, often through phishing emails (social engineering) or drive-by downloads (compromised website) tricking unsuspected users into clicking and installing malicious files onto their machines. In addition, newer methods of ransomware targeting vulnerable web servers have also been observed as a point of entry to an organization’s network.”

The article provides several recommendations to reduce the risk of downloading ransomware. These include:

  • Focus on training your employees with security awareness. If employees can identify a phishing email, they will be less likely to click on malicious links that could result in a malware download. By educating employees with phishing education to change behavior, risk can be reduced.

  • Take a continuous approach to risk mitigation by conducting regular assessments to identify risk to help organizations take proactive and preventive measures.

  • Run scenario-based tests to determine if your tools and security protocols are effective at keeping cyberattacks at bay.
