Hikvision Senior Cybersecurity Director Guest Authors SSI Article, ‘Securing a VMS: 3 Things to Remember’

Story Covers Tips to Minimize Security Vulnerabilities in VMS Systems

Hikvision's Senior Cybersecurity Director, Chuck Davis, guest authored an article on minimizing vulnerabilities in video management software (VMS) systems in the Security Sales & Integration (SSI) piece, "Securing a VMS: 3 Things to Remember.” Davis speaks to the vital role video management software (VMS) plays in modern physical security and highlights a few tips to reduce the risk of an attacker compromising these systems.

Network segmentation provides a security blanket between video surveillance equipment and other computers by ensuring the VMS is on a separate network. If an attacker gains control of one system, they can no longer use it to access others. "Large enterprise organizations fully understand and implement network segmentation strategies, but many small and medium-sized businesses do not," Davis said in the article.

For any VMS system connected to the Internet, another defense is a VPN firewall. Davis explains in the article that “instead of port-forwarding, a firewall with a VPN server can allow for remote access to the VMS from the Internet in a secure, encrypted manner."

Applying these basic preventative measures can drastically lower the chance of a VMS system being compromised.

Read the full article with more tips from Hikvision’s Davis to reduce vulnerabilities in VMS systems.
