How video & audio convergence supports proactive security

Video security systems have become highly sophisticated recently, with higher resolution imaging, larger storage capacities, and more secure encryptions, among other things. However, CCTV systems are mainly designed for evidence recording and investigation, as well as loss or damage to property, but invasions still happen. Video security solution equipped with warning systems and immediate processing enables proactive capabilities, and will be a trend in the future for the industry. Here, if audio and video can be converged together, a real-time deterrent can be achieved – along with even more functionality.

In a solution that combines video recording with audio features, IP speakers can be linked with cameras, access control systems, and alarm devices. When such a CCTV system detects an intrusion or if the alarm system is activated, IP speakers can play programmed audio warnings to deter would-be intruders. The audio message can be a powerful deterrent to intrusions as they happen.

Along with preprogrammed audio warnings, operators can also speak through the IP speakers when notified of an intrusion. Scheduled audio messaging and public address broadcasting are two more practical functions made possible by converging video & audio systems. IP speakers can play audio recordings according to a schedule, and operators can use the audio system to broadcast public information as needed to audiences as well.

Linking video and audio systems can be of practical used across a wide range of scenarios – including perimeter security, fuel stations, metro and railway stations, office buildings, and much more.

Perimeter protection is eager for a real-time deterrent

In perimeter protection, a real-time deterrent is a function that people have been eager for. Especially for home owners, whose outdoor CCTV cameras can record trespassers but no immediate deterrent actions are available when they are detected.

But adding audio capabilities in this scenario would mean home owners can set recorded warnings that, once intrusion is detected, can be automatically triggered, helping to prevent loss of property and even more serious incidents.

Petrol (gas) stations with quick response capability

Petrol stations are vulnerable during non-business hours, and damage to petrol storage facilities can cause disasters. Currently, with CCTV systems alone, no immediate action can be taken when an intrusion occurs. But once again, a solution combining video and audio can provide detection, alarm triggering, and audio warnings for a quick, effective response.

At fuel stations with self-payment systems but no outside service staff, an audio/video solution would enable remote operators to speak to customers via the IP speakers. They can help customers and prevent security incidents without putting themselves in danger. And in emergency situations, the audio system can be used to broadcast critical information to both staff and customers.

Broadcasting for passenger safety

In metro and railway stations, platforms can be dangerous. During peak hours, passengers may cross warning lines and move too close to the tracks. The convergence of video and audio will be helpful here. Intelligent cameras monitor people flow and automatically identify a passenger crossing warning lines. Accordingly, staff can use the solution to broadcast live audio warnings as well as train schedule or other information whenever it’s needed.

More security and efficiency in office buildings

CCTV and access control systems are commonly used in office buildings. However, when an intrusion or security anomaly has been detected, operators rely on sending on-site guards to check the situation. Efficiency is low and guards often arrive too late to prevent an incident. In this type of case, the video & audio solution can send an immediate audio warning to deter an intrusion, as well as link video and audio so operators can check remotely via the live feed.

Similarly, during emergency situations, security operators can use the audio system to broadcast information to people inside a building, extending the reach of security staff, keeping people safe from harm, and reducing costs in the process.
